Hi, this is my first (well, actually, fourth) attempt to post a theory, and it have gone unanswered in Cinescape. (Of course you can only imagine how disappointed I was, ah well) Anyway, this theory has been brought up a few times—and I’m sorry if this is “history repeating itself or something”. I've posted this theory in OotP, and mrspotter00 posted a similar theory about this on Cinescape (titled "Snape's Espionage") in book 5 forum. I just want to see what you guys thought of this. I would post this one in the "Rumours" thread in this boards, but I think Snape deserves a new thread. ;D
Anyway, I know you all must be familiar with the theory that Snape is a vampire—ah, yes, very interesting, you say. Well, using marvolo and petunialives’ topics, I’ve gathered a few interesting points. You all know that JK often describes Snape as pale, with greasy black hair and a hooked nose. A more specific description is “a teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and sallow skin." Sallow means a sickly yellowish hue or complexion.
JK gives more descriptions about Snape and almost all of them are the same. Some might argue: “But Snape have shadows in the movie!” Why would JK or the producer waste (there’s no other way of putting it) money on a subtle hint that people wouldn’t probably notice? <br>
Harry also thought that Snape have an ability to read minds—and Snape seems to know that there’s someone else with him when he was threatening Quirrell (in book 1) and in the movie he tried to “grab” whoever it is (who is Harry under his invisibility cloak). Although there is the part that Harry breathes quite heavily in the movie.
Now these are quotes that might suggest Snape is a vampire:
Bk4, pg 426 "Keep walking, then!" Snape snarled, and he brushed past them, his long black cloak billowing out behind them."
Prisoner of Azkaban pg. 429 <br>"Wonder what they'll give us next year?" said Seamus Finnigan gloomily. <br>"Maybe a vampire," suggested Dean Thomas hopefully."
- Hmmm, a little foreshadowing, perhaps? Are they going to have Snape as the next DADA teacher in book 6 or 7?
Prisoner of Azkaban, p.429-430, American edition-
A muscle twitched unpleasantly at the corner of Snape's thin mouth every time he looked at Harry, and he was constantly flexing his fingers, as though itching to place them around Harry's throat.
- Very interesting... very scary too.
Also, did you guys remember that Quirrell's turban smells of garlic? Well, assuming that it is, then it may be done to keep Snape off him, as both of them are on a warpath in SS.
Now, I also have another evidence—the most foretelling (or foreshadowing) hint that JKR gave us in book 1, when Harry faced Quirrell (when Harry discovers that Quirrell’s actually e-v-i-l). This is an exact quote (or paragraph) from book 1, and it’s thanks to marvolo’s fantastic thread that I got it!
Book 1, pg.288.
Quirrell was talking in the… whatever it is (a chamber?). "..I wondered whether I'd be meeting you here, Potter."
"But I thought - Snape - "
"Severus?" Quirrell laughed. "Yes, Severus does seem the type, doesn't he? So useful to have him swooping around like an overgrown bat. Next to him, who would suspect p-p-poor, st-stuttering P-Professor Quirrell?"
That’s a good quote, wasn’t it? Well, this brings me to my next point: you know that vampires could turn into bats, right? Well, maybe it’s just a simile, but rather an unlikely simile, right? JK (or Quirrell) could’ve used another simile to the same effect, but no, they just have to say “overgrown bat”. <br>
My next point please: There are rumors going around in Cinescape that Snape is going to go back to Voldemort, take the Polyjuice Potions and take his position as Crouch Jr. to spy for Dumbledore. Okay, what I think is that Snape is going to transform into a bat and secretly spy on Voldemort. This is a really effective way, required that Snape’s not supposed to be seen or Voldemort might be suspicious as to why “that overgrown bat kept following him around”. <br>
That was long. Oh yes, you can go here (http://messageboard.cinescape.com/harrypotter/ubb/Archives/Archive-000002/HTML/20010809-23-000089.htmlhere) for marvolo’s marvelous—pardon the pun—topic. And for the newest topic (petunialives started this new thread), you could go here (http://messageboard.cinescape.com/harrypotter/ubb/Forum23/HTML/002171.html) Oh, how could I forget? A special thanks to mrspotter00, who thought up of this first! I think she will most likely post a similar topic to this one on Cinescape, but since I posted this one here already...
Any thoughts? <br>
