He appears to be a crabby old coot. Just because he is one in Harry's view doesn't mean he is in general. He's just bitter and kind of lonely. I think he is capable of loving Hermione. And anyway, it's not like he's going grey yet, so he's not exactly ugly.

I think Hermione would be out of Snape's sphere of potential partners. Severus has a very small sphere. Severus looks upon the world in an almost purely intellectual way. Having an affair with a student simply does not fit into his world. -Ameria

Really? I thought his treatment of Harry was rather to do with emotional rather than intellectual. If he was purely intellectual in his outlook on life he would favour the Slytherins so much for a start and wouldn't be so cruel to some of the students.

I didn't say he didn't have emotions. He can certainly hold a grudge. And he likes to torment people who are weaker than he is. Hey, everybody's gotta have a hobby. But his approach to love would be *very* intellectualized, because it wouldn't be easy for him. When something is tough, he hides behind that intellectual outlook. -Ameria

I know this'll never happen in the books but I'm a fan of it with fanfics. So what do you think of them being a couple? It wouldn't happen, but that would be quite interesting and I actually woudn't midn it.

I've read hermionechic06's fan fic and it's S/H...the fic was really good but frankly, the idea grosses me out. I mean, Snapey's this slimey, gouchy person while Hermy's all books, teddy bear and flowers, if you get what i mean.(your average cute girl) If i made Hermy sound shallow, sorry. She still kicks buttocks. I'll puke if H&S hook up in the future books but i'm pretty okay with it in fan fics

Like Snape or not, he is slimey and grouchy. At least, the one in the novels is. The one in fanfiction seems to be mysteriously romantic and hygenic... LOL! -Ameria

I agree about the romantic bit but not on the hygenic. I think you'd be astounded if you knew how unhygenic people can be. Especially in the medieval times when people only washed 3 times in a lifetime. When they were born, when they were married and when they died. Just because he has greasy hair and yellow teeth doesn't mean he is unhygenic. It only takes a few days for someone's hair to get greasy and yellow teeth isn't only caused by lack of brushing but many things. Unhygenic is when people get diseases because of it. So yes Snape is fairly hygenic then. As for romance. Who cares, who needs it.

Okay, point taken about the definition of hygienic.
I do know about the medieval times. But this isn't the medieval times, or an unindustrialized country, or any like place.
I do realize that it only takes a few days for hair to get greasy, but I get the impression that J.K. is saying that his hair is *always* greasy. I have a feeling that if it wasn't, various characters would die of shock.
And yes, the romance thing. That is how he feels. S/Hr doesn't work, which was the original point.

Just because someone doesn't like romance doesn't mean they don't believe in love. I'm proof of that. As for hair that is *always* greasy. Still doesn't mean it isn't washed. My hair used to be always greasy, it even looked very shiny in photos. I used to wash it once a week with shampoo and conditioner and no matter was I did it was limp and greasy. I had to cut it shorter much shorter, wash it every 2nd day and only with shampoo and never moisturising shampoo. I also had to hairdry it. I'm an expert on the greasy hair problem and that goes for skin to.

I'm a very good example of greasy hair. I constantly wash mine. You're not supposed to wash it ever day, but I do anyway. This suggests that Snape has kind of hard-to-tame hair. I know that mine is, and when it dries, it feels greasy once more.
Snape and Hermione will not happen realistically. But it is perfectly fine for the fanon characters to be together. Some people have their squicks (like me and anything with Hagrid/), and that's okay too, but people can still argue that Snape and Hermione would get together.
Snape reminds me of Malfoy (ie, rough exterior, something Jaheira always says about Malfoy and I won't ever forget it). The reason he acts the way he does (like a "coot") was influenced by his past. He despised his Gryffindor rivals, percieved them to all be the same, nervy people he put up with, and now favors Slytherin alumni only. He has yet to see that not all Gryffindors are the same, and some people will insist that Hermione will be the one to do it.
Hermione is just a studious person and is completely obsessed about her work. Being who she is, she'll go to any lengths to earn top marks. I'm sure that even includes nightly visits to the Potions dungeons with Professor Snape for "tutorials". From then on, people will craft their own versions of how they'll "hook up."
I like to read Snape/Hermione fics, thanks to Jaheira, but it's not my favorite ship. H/H is much more realistic than that.
And about Hermione falling for older men... that was just because Lockhart was considered attractive. Not the one in the movie, he's ugly. But she must have liked his looks. However, one could also argue that she liked him for other things. She herself even said in CoS that she admired all of the things he's done (ie, during Cornish Pixie incident). So, there is, to some extent, *evidence* that Snape and Hermione could love each other for other reasons.
And: there's always room for change (as in their feelings toward each other).

Not wash it every day...? I've never heard of that! Everyone I've known washes it every day once they mature! If I didn't wash it every day...well...it would be greasy! -Ameria

Rough exterior, yes I said that because I am often told I have one so naturally I'm an expert on it LOL. Hey, have you read any of the fanfics that don't do the romance thing that way like how Hermione will go back in time and fall in love. They're quite good as well. There's a really good one called 'A litte of your time' I linked in the DMFC topic on cinescape it's amazing. Hermione does stuff in the past and it starts changing the present anyway I better not say too much. ;D

Didn't you know that you aren't supposed to wash your hair every day. That is supposed to be one of the worst things you can do to your hair. It apparently makes hair dry and brittle like hay. Only people with really greasy hair should do it. People with normal hair should wash it from about 3 days to 1 week. I know people who have dry hair that wash it every fortnight. You mean go through puberty don't you? Just out of curiosity, how old are you? Would you do something as silly as wash your hair with soap or your face with soap? Do you know what greasy hair feels like?
